I’ve been working on this list for a while now. My original intent was to publish this post on January 1st but I had a lot of music and mixed cd’s to go through! I also complicated matters by deciding that I would stick only to songs on albums released in the appropriate year – my “favourite” cd’s typically have recent releases mixed in with favourites from long ago – so that meant I had to research to determine when each album and associated song was released. I also stayed away from compilations or “best of” albums. It was really hard for me to pick just one song from each year and in some cases I confess, I simply pulled a name from a hat. I also looked at how often the song was played and how many times the same song appeared on different mixes.
So, here’s my favourite songs of the decade:
- Fugitive, David Gray (2009)
- Violet Hill, Coldplay (2008)
- Your Love Alone Is Not Enough, Manic Street Preachers (2007)
- I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor, Arctic Monkeys (2006)
- Soul Meets Body, Death Cab for Cutie (2005)
- Wisemen, James Blunt (2004)
- White Flag, Dido (2003)
- Harder To Breathe, Maroon 5 (2002)
- Have A Nice Day, Stereophonics (2001)
- Bohemian Like You, The Dandy Warhols (2000)
I just can’t believe how hard it was to pick just one song as there was so much good music released this decade. I will post my favourite mixes for each year soon – either as a post or on a separate page of the blog. There are so many great songs and bands that I listened to over the past 10 years and I want to get them all listed.
Any surprises on my list? What would your favourites look like?
I love your format, but find you quite brave to only choose 10 songs!! I had trouble choosing my 25 and even then, I’m not happy about those that have been left out.
I started doing my chronological top 10 to include with this comment but gave up. Some years are just too strong (2004-2008), while others too weak (2001 and 2009). It didn’t work with my favourites.

I agree about the strong and weak years – you should see my overall favourites list from 2004, 2005 and 2006! Just wanted to try something a bit different but it was a difficult exercise. It’s like I’m leaving out personal friends or something…lol.

wow this is way to hard…off the top of my head I would say these songs had the most impact on me personally:
1) thursday – cross out the eyes
2.)mars vota – roulette dares
3)yeah yeah yeahs – maps
4)blood brothers – the shame
5)broken social scene – anthems for a 17 year-old girl
6)arcade fire – neon bible
7)interpol – obstacle 1
8)the killers – when you were young
9)phoenix – too young
10)neon blonde – chandeliers and vines
and I’m leaving a lot of better songs out…this is way too tuff

Lol Car – thanks for giving it a go and yes, it’s tough. Love some of your picks & a couple that I was not familiar with. One of the reasons I love doing this – I get some new music tips. I’m looking forward to including a song or two from you in next year’s list…

I like the way you did your sorting and I may give it a try myself when I get a little time (no rush for a decade best of right?).
